Thursday (2/28) we’ll have our weekly Open Mic featuring DC-area duo The Sweater Set. Our Open Mic portion will be at 8pm, with The Sweater Set’s set at 9. If you’d like to perform, be sure and sign up around 7:30 because the schedule will fill up.
Since their early years, Maureen Andary and Sara Curtin have developed a unique musical relationship. Intricate soprano harmonies soar over multi-instrumental arrangements of ukulele, guitar, flute, hand percussion, and the occasional kazoo/glockenspiel solo. Listeners are invited into The Sweater Set’s joyful friendship as their songs play out like musically elaborate gossip about (what else?) the perils of courtship, lust and heartbreak. Robyn Mincher of The Washington Post Express wrote “(The Sweater Set) weaves through personal narratives as if Curtin and Andary are whispering juicy tidbits in your ear. But don’t let the vintage-clad gossiping girls fool you — their songs are tales of self-governing women.” 2011 Washington Area Music Award for Best Contemporary Folk Duo/Group.

Friday (3/1) at 8pm we’re hosting a show featuring featuring local musicians Rob Martin and Neil Ackroyd. Rob is a 21-year-old folk-rock singer-songwriter whose music suggests influences ranging from James Taylor to John Mayer. Born in Charlottesville, he has been playing solo acoustic music locally for almost ten years. Rob’s performances are noteworthy for their awkward attempted witticisms as well as rambling and passionate music. Rob is currently working on his sophomore release to follow up his 2009 album “From Where We Began”. http://www.reverbnation.com/robmartin

On Friday, February 8th, at 8pm we’ll have a show featuring two of our favorite local artists, Michael Coleman (with band) and Matthew McAllister. Pass the hat.

Michael Coleman burst seemingly out of nowhere onto the Charlottesville music scene in early 2011. As a singer and songwriter he draws from his religious upbringing, life experiences and influences ranging from Otis Redding to Dave Matthews. His skills as a jazz drummer translate themselves to the guitar to create a truly unique rhythmical sound. Rounded off with a voice that is as raw as it is soothing and passionate, Coleman’s music has struck a chord with the people of Charlottesville and beyond. Our Final Friday art gallery opening will happen on January 25th, from 7-9pm. It will feature work from Sarah-Louise Dechow, entitled “The Forgetfulness of Time.” Check out the Facebook event for more details.

Next Tuesday (12/11) we are having a special late-night exam break event at 11:30pm. All Souls Charlottesville is providing us with pancakes and all kinds of crazy toppings, and we will be watching Elf and getting on some Christmas spirit. Join the Facebook event.

Next week we have two shows at the Garden. On Monday, (10/22), Cuddle Magic will play a show, featuring local favorite Jesse Harper. Cuddle Magic is a band from Brooklyn that performs lush, playful songs with wide-ranging instrumentation. Cuddle Magic balances folk timbres with sometimes atonal harmonies, pop song-craft with rhythmic complexity, and direct emotional lyrics with dense wordplay. Doors at 8pm. $5. 

Our 10/25 Thursday night open mic will feature San Diego electro-rock groupClaudeo! Come ready to dance.

Every Sunday we are facilitating a class called Living a Gospel Shaped Life. This group examines the Gospel’s impact on all aspects of life, touching on issues such as spiritual disciplines, vocation, relationships, finances, justice, and reconciliation. All of this involves rich engagement with the scriptures, historical Christian writers, and various streams of Christian thought. Two collegiate ministers, Garrett Trent (Greek IV) and Evan Hansen (Eunoia) will be facilitating this class. We meet at 8:45am on Sunday mornings upstairs at Para Coffee on the Corner. For details, email Evan at evan.hansen@vbmb.org.
